Ocular disease management

Many eye diseases develop without symptoms which means that by the time you notice, there may be permanent damage to your eyes. Our assessment includes a dilated fundus exam and advanced diagnostic testing such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect early signs of glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. Earlier detection, diagnosis and treatment of these conditions can help preserve your vision.

Dry Eye Assessment and Management

Dry eye disease is one of the most commonly diagnosed eye conditions affecting over 6 million Canadians. This condition develops as a result insufficient tear volume and/or poor tear film quality which ultimately leads to inflammation on the surface of the eye. If left untreated, dry eye disease can be damaging to your eyes, affect your quality of vision and cause significant discomfort.

At Bloor West Optometry, we perform a careful case history and a series of diagnostic tests to determine the root cause of your dry eye. This approach allows us to customize your treatment to address your underlying causes and provide relief of your symptoms.

Symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Irritation (burning, itching, gritty sensation)
  • Blurred vision
  • Redness of the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light / excess
  • Excessively watery eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Discomfort wearing contact lenses

Diagnostic Imaging

Meibography

Meibomian glands are small glands within the eyelids that produce the moisture layer on our eyes. For many reasons, the glands can stop secreting properly, become stagnant and eventually cease to function causing dry eye disesase. Meibography is an advanced diagnostic tool to detect and track any progressive damage to the Meibomian glands. This technique allows us to customize our dry eye treatment modalities.

Dry Eye Treatments

Meibomian Gland Expression
The Meibomian glands produce an olive oil type of substance called Meibum which lubricates the eyes. The meibum in these glands can often become thick and stagnant which can cause permanent damage to the glands and dry eye disease. An in-office treatment can be performed where heat is applied to the eyelids and then the glands are manually expressed. This procedure helps improve their function and prevent permanent loss of the glands.

AB Max

Dry eye disease can be exacerbated by blepharitis; an inflammation of the eyelids caused by excess bacteria along the upper and lower lash line. When the bacteria multiply, they produce a biofilm which is similar to the plaque on your teeth.

AB Max is an in-office treatment that gently cleans your eyelids with a handheld device. This simple procedure removes micro-organisms and the buildup of biofilm.

Myopia Management

Myopia or nearsightedness is the inability to see objects clearly at a distance. This condition occurs because the eye grows longer during early childhood to teenage years.

The goal of myopia management is to slow the progression of myopia and the length of the eye. Lifestyle benefits of myopia management include less dependency on glasses and contact lenses. However, more importantly, as the eye grows longer the tissues are forced to stretch to accommodate this growth. This can lead to weakening of the eye tissues and an increased risk of serious ocular complications such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts later in life.

At Bloor West Optometry, our myopia management approach is to customize a treatment plan for each patient which may include a discussion of risk factors, spectacle correction with MiyoSmart lenses, contact lens correction with MiSight lenses, and/or atropine therapy.

Treatments
MiyoSmart
MiyoSmart by Hoya are specialized lenses which use a unique and easily adaptable technology called DIMS (defocus incorporated multiple segments). These lenses are also impact resistant and provide UV protection. In a two-year clinical trial, MiyoSmart lenses reduced myopia progression by an average of 59%.
MiSight
MiSight 1 day contact lenses are an FDA approved treatment to slow the progression of myopia in children. In a multi-centred, double masked clinical study of children aged 8-12, MiSight 1-day contact lenses have been shown to slow the progression of myopia by 59% when compared with a single vision one day lens over a three-year period.

Laser Eye Surgery Consultations

LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is now one of the most common treatments for patients looking to decrease their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK creates a corneal flap and uses the excimer laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and the recovery is rapid.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) also uses the excimer laser to correct vision but removes a surface layer of cells called the corneal epithelium instead of creating a flap. The recovery is slower but may be more suitable to some patients.

SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) and RLE (refractive lens exchange) are other effective refractive surgery options available. If you are a candidate for any of these procedures, we will provide pre-operative care, arrange for your surgery and provide your post-operative and continued care. We will ensure that your experience is as smooth and easy as possible.
