Retinal Imaging

What is Retinal Photography?

Our office now offers digital imaging when you visit us for your regular eye exam.  This new technology helps us to monitor and detect any changes to the back of your eyes by taking detailed pictures of the retina. We strongly encourage the use of this new technology as an integral tool in determining your eye health as well as creating a more comprehensive record of the current condition of your eyes. Digital flash photography has the added safety benefit of no radiation or x-ray exposure to your eyes.  We have invested in this new technology because we are committed to providing you with the highest standard of eye care available.

What is corneal pachymetry?

Corneal pachymetry is an ultrasound measurement of corneal thickness. There can be significant variations in corneal thickness between patients which can affect the interpretation of your eye pressure from the standard glaucoma test. Pachymetry is an important test to allow your doctor to assess the true risk of developing glaucoma for any given eye pressure. We strongly recommend this test if there are signs of glaucoma or if you have a family history of glaucoma. The test is painless and takes only a few minutes to perform.

Pachymetry is also an essential measurement needed to help determine if you are a good candidate for certain surgical refractive procedures such as LASIK. Laser surgery removes tissue from the cornea and pachymetry is important to be certain that there is enough corneal tissue to proceed with surgery.
